Books read in December 2023

I know, this is a miracle. I finally caught up! Lol

The Jade Scripture by David North, first in the River of Fate series. Five stars, finished December 4, 2023.
The blurb didn’t appeal to me, but I picked this up because I love the author’s other work. The beginning was both bizarre and captivating. The way Verse is connected to his previous lives was astonishing and, to me, original. I’m not a fan of the ghost, but he did help some. Teris just made me sad. The ending felt like both an ending and a beginning, because a balance formed. I’m curious on what will happen next. Read with Kindle Unlimited. Review did not sync from Amazon.

The Flame of the North by Alexey Osadchuk, fourth in the Last Life series. Five stars, finished December 9, 2023.
Never goes where I expect.
I really love that this series keeps surprising me. I think I have an idea of how the story will progress and then I’m surprised. I do wonder why Max hasn’t considered that if he could have been born in this world, and that he sees parallels, why would a specific other person not be a possible reincarnation. I love how sneakily he’s building up his power both magically and socially. Who will be the next person to learn that he isn’t to be trifled with? Another review that did not sync from Amazon.

He Who Fights with Monsters 10 by Shirtaloon, tenth in the HWFWM series. Five stars, finished December 12, 2023.
Growing pains.
Those who have power hate to be unimportant. Rick’s jokes about women are both face palm and laugh. It is so easy to bring my thinking alongside Jason’s. He does better growing up than I do though. Boris surprised me. Read with Kindle Unlimited. Amazon failed to sync.

Astrology: Understanding the Birth Chart by Kevin Burk. Nonfiction. “Finished” December 2023, but I will be rereading and referencing this.
I read this as a textbook for an Astrology class. The information in this book was easier to understand, and helped break down some concepts into easier chunks of information. I do recommend this, as well as Theresa Reed’s Astrology for Real Life. I will continue to read this multiple times and use it as a reference for my current studies.

Accelerated Wicca by Belladonna Laveau, first in the ABC’s of Witchcraft Book, nonfiction. “Finished” December 2023, but I’ll be rereading a referencing. Five stars.

The Path of Ascension 5 by C. Mantis, fifth in the PoA series. Five stars, finished December 19, 2023.
Undercover.
I cannot even comprehend trying to act like someone I’m not. I understand why Matt and Liz needed to, but it was still mind boggling to read. There are time skips, but they flow with the story. The competition was funny. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Azarinth Healer: Book 3 by Rhaegar, third in the AH series. Five stars, finished December 24, 2023.
Fun, funny, and harsh.
I hated learning of a loss. I love how others inspire Ilea to grow. I admire the fact that she doesn’t want to go on rampages. There is at least one part where Ilea treats leveling like a drug, reminding me of the leveling high from another series. I will be disappointed if this series goes in that direction. I love that Ilea accepts all beings, regardless of their origins. I need more lol. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

The Heavenly Serpent by Alvin Atwater, fifth in the Rise of the Cheat Potion Maker series. Five stars, finished December 25, 2023.
But the other rewards!
Ending the book while opening chests is just mean, but hilarious. I like how Nate is becoming more comfortable with the inevitable level of exposure based on his power. The mom and pop issue is sad, and I wonder if he will butt his head in. With the defeat of some enemies comes new ones. Hopefully he and Milia can keep any sycophants at bay. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound by Noret Flood/ puddles4263, first in the LoRG series. I like this abbreviation. Five stars, finished December 29, 2023.
I needed a great book.
I’ve read one middling books and series recently, and many of the great series I follow don’t have more books. I picked this one up because of the author. I love the desperation characters can have to be more, especially if they need solitude and enjoy crafting. The awkward fumbling when around people is relatable for me. The fact that even with this they can rise up into overpowered characters is freeing. I’m amused and worried at the type of people who are being attracted to Randidly, specifically the ones he is worried about. The ex is an idiot though. I’m absolutely excited to be able to binge this series for a while, and I can see it becoming a series I add publication dates to my calendar. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

I succeeded in getting all these reviews on here. Hopefully, this will increase these books, series, and authors exposure so they can have more readers. Why do I want them to have more readers? Because it keeps the authors, and publishers when that partnership exists, motivated to keep publishing. I did not meet my reading goal, but I still read 159 according to GoodReads. Happy Reading!

Books read in August 2023

Yeah this is late lol. I still want to share it.

Defiance of the Fall 10 by J.F. Brink/ TheFirstDefier, tenth in the DotF series. I honestly hate that this genre rarely names individual books. Five stars, finished August 9, 2023.
Minimal side interruptions
I’m quite happy that this book almost exclusively follows Zac. I didn’t expect the two mentioned players, but I’m seeing a pattern. Very enjoyable progression, and the visit home was a bit of a growing up experience to me. Zac and many of those around him are sprinting forward. The world, and system-verse, around them are either being pulled along, or left behind. The ending had me squeeing. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

The New World by Monsoon117, first in the series of the same name. Five stars, finished August 12, 2023.
Bloodthirsty and personal worth
The book started pretty normal with a friendly activity between friends. It got hard fast, and became an epic struggle of determination and possibility. The initial encounter with other humans surprised me. Honestly, I feel like this held multiple books since so much happened. I love how Daniel doesn’t judge or make assumptions regarding the various beings around him. The encounter between humans he knew before the system shocked and hurt me. I like the new friends, and Daniel’s drive to grow and be more is inspirational. I think I’ve discovered another favorite series. Read with Kindle Unlimited.
The New World: A LitRPG Apocalypse Adventure https://a.co/d/0tdBKc9

They Who Watch Over the Night by Konstantin Zaitsev, third in the Legend of Raven series. Four stars, finished August 16, 2023.
Training montage
This book reads as an extensive (and still interesting) training montage. He keeps being pushed and pulled in so many directions. Everyone seems to want or need something from him. The new partnership with Mei Li shows a bit of how these are teenagers, and Yang isn’t blind to attraction. That said, I can’t say whether they will end up as familial or if a romance will happen. It’s an interesting quandary. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Trials of Cydaria by SunriseCV, fourth in the System Universe series. Five stars, finished August 17, 2023.
Not the strongest… Yet
It’s fun seeing Derek meet and team up with adventurers who are stronger than he is. His new family has settled in, and he gets to be more of an adventurer. The Great System seems really odd. Silvi is now more of a chef than a murderbunny, but her quirks and terminology are still funny. I wish she had accompanied Derek on his adventure though. Blitz is hilarious, and I can’t wait to see how that goes in court. I hope Derek can make his adventure faster, because the Kingdom’s situation has me worried. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Echoes of War by David North, sixth in the Guardian of Aster Fall series. Five stars, finished August 21, 2023.
I love an OP beat down of idiots
Sam seems a lot more adult in this book, which was kind of apparent in the previous. He doesn’t get annoyed if some random interrupts his crafting for instance. He finally makes his way back home, but not before we see embers of a potential future romance. The Tree and other big moves he made regarding those destructive towards the World Core and seal were thrilling. I like that he’s progressed enough to be above the petty crap his distant relatives and others who feel they are victims of an unjust rule. His solution was unexpected, but well thought out and reasonable. I’m curious who will try to throw a wrench in that. Thoroughly enjoyed this read, especially the epic battle towards the end. I’m curious if the other universe or whatever is related in their boogeymen given the descriptions of the devour path and the Vos’Rekens. Read with Kindle Unlimited.
Echoes of War (Guardian of Aster Fall Book 6) https://a.co/d/7LaTpc0

Blood Ties by Alexey Osadchuk, third in the Last Life series. Five stars, finished August 23, 2023.
A bit of high society nonsense
I have thought a few times, as an adult, that I’m glad I wasn’t born into specific tiers. I just don’t have any patience, and I’m too hot headed. Max is definitely different. He thrives in scheming, which is accurate in how a fox related individual might be thought of. I expected him to interact more with Emile, there are so many uppity women who had me wanting to smack them, and some very interesting discoveries are made at home. Max doesn’t seem to be able to put down roots, because he’s always beholden to go where his “betters” dictate. I really want a super powerful sneaky and vicious outcome to this series, but I’ll love it no matter where the story goes. Blood Ties (Last Life Book #3): A Progression Fantasy Series https://a.co/d/0gcOo8j

The Pastel Magic Book of Tarot Spreads by Maria Morales. A book with various Tarot spreads. Five stars, read over probably a year, finished August 23, 2023.
Thought provoking spreads
I loved the spreads in this. Even the spreads I was unsure of still had a depth that had a message I needed to hear. These weren’t complicated either, which made these great for my readings. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Preservation by Seth Ring, sixth in the Battle Mage Farmer series. Four stars, finished August 25, 2023.
I’m actually shocked
I liked that even in the midst of searching for solutions to destruction Ellie and John made time for themselves. Not sure if it will matter to others, but this doesn’t even have a fade to black aspect to the romance. It’s very innocent in this department. I didn’t expect anything close to the ending, and I’m exhilarated to even consider what can happen next. I enjoyed the foreshadowing, and I’m curious what the Seer sees and how her powers might be similar to Ellie’s. Gorra’s reaction to John’s real strength is hilarious. Read with Kindle Unlimited.
Preservation: A Fantasy LitRPG Adventure (Battle Mage Farmer Book 6) https://a.co/d/1OiTyjt

I didn’t read as much as usual this month, because I did not have as much time I was able to dedicate to reading for fun. I will most likely be cramming reading for fun into the limited times I will have free time.

Books read in June 2023

Ascendant Insanity by KamikazePotato, fourth in the An Outcast in Another World series. Four stars, finished June 1st, 2023.
Two books in one
I am extremely pleased to have Jason’s experiences shown as an after book short story. Rob and Jason are hilarious and perfect for each other.
Jason is becoming quite adept at pissing off leaders, and gods. Leveling High is still concerning, and I wonder what makes it different—after the revelation about Diplomacy. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Savannah by SunriseCV, third in the System Universe series. Five stars, finished June 3rd, 2023. A favorite series.
More about Derek
In previous books, Derek had a lot of interaction with the people in his life now. In this, he actually spends a significant amount of time alone—even from Silvi. This is a much more mentally healthier than the other significant time he experienced. Some conflicts come to a head, some new bad guys are introduced, and Derek lectures royalty. I was so enthralled with the story that I was shocked to turn the page and see “epilogue.” Read this series. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

To Sir Phillip, With Love by Julia Quinn, fifth in the Bridgertons series. Three stars, finished June 3rd, 2023.
Book needs a content disclaimer: suicide, depression, abuse.
I did enjoy reading this, and I’m happy with Eloise’s new family. However, the modern woman in me experienced a ton of frustration. Still, this was a happy book, even with the heartbreaking beginning. As a person with depression, I did feel annoyed at how neurodivergent mental health was spoken about. As a person who was abused as a child, Phillip is relatable in his fears and in his anger. It doesn’t help that this is a time period before PTSD treatment. Read the ebook on the Libby app. Included the Epilogue.

All the Skills by Honour Rae, first in the All the Skills series. Five stars, finished June 3rd, 2023. A very enjoyable read.
Surprisingly enjoyable.
I liked the blurb, but I was hesitant since it has cards as the source of power. I’m actually really happy I decided to read this. This was an emotional read, and Arthur grows up with a lot of things happening. I absolutely approve of the actions at the end of the book. The cliffhanger was expected, but worth it. I’m excited to see what comes next. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Threat from the Deep by Shane Purdy, third in the Rise of the Winter Wolf series. Five stars, finished June 3, 2023.
I’m really impressed.
I like that a reason for random hatred is given, even if Wolf doesn’t understand how extreme it seems to be getting. The one death hit hard, and I’m not sure what to think about that. I knew something happening was inevitable because of the attitude, but I wasn’t expecting that. I’m also worried at the mild amnesia. I will say that I expected a big shock for the audience, but it was so much more than I expected. I dunno if I could accept cults. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Beyond the Frontiers by Ell Leigh Clarke and Michael Anderle, seventy-ninth in the Kurtherian Gambit Universe and first in the Deuces Wild series. Three stars, finished June 4, 2023.
I’m kind of surprised.
This book was a drag for me. I never pictured a book with Ranger Two would be hard to pay attention to. This felt like filler. An in between story to explain something that happened. But it’s not really. The emotions dealt with were understandable, the action was okay but a bit ridiculous, and I just didn’t get how this fits, other than the characters, in with the overall Kurtherian bookverse. I did read it all, and parts did make me cry. It was not cathartic. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

An OP Returnee by Stuart Grosse, first in The OP Lich is a Returnee series. Four stars, finished June 4, 2023.
Odd but interesting
I picked this up on a whim. I tend to find returnee stories to be cathartic and funny. This specific story adds another world (isekai) aspect, which turned a lot of my assumptions on their head. I love how Akagawa is interacting with her worlds, and there are some light hearted funny moments, as well as blew everyone’s minds moments. The epilogue or last part of the book was shocking, but after I thought about it, could be expected. Adds an “oh no what will idiots attempt next”. Enjoyable and a quick read. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Magic Steals by Ilona Andrews, seven and a half in the World of Kate Daniels, second in the Dali Harimau series, and six and a half in the Kate Daniels series. Five stars, finished June 6, 2023. A reread.
I really enjoy reading about Dali and Jim. They’re cute, and they both help each other understand more about themselves and the world.
Magic Steals (Kate Daniels) https://a.co/d/9jhB9QD

Curious Beginnings by V.A. Lewis, first in the Salvos series. Five stars, finished June 7, 2023.
Honestly adorable
Baby demons are adorable. Salvos is funny in the mortal realm, and savage in both. I do have questions about the different type demons spawn with. I hope Salvos can become stronger and also find a way back. I’d be intrigued if the series eventually progresses to her overthrowing the current demon king, but there’s no current evidence that will be how this series will go. Daniel is an awkward mystery. I like Edythe. Very engaging story. A few minor typos and odd sentences, but not more than a few. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

New Horizons by Selkie Myth, eighth in the Beyond the Dragon Eye Moons series. Five stars, finished June, 8, 2023.
Slow read but fascinating
I can’t say that I know enough about the human body to know how factual this book, and series, are. The way it’s written is fascinating, technical, and by that only makes a lot of it sound plausible. Even if it’s mostly fantasy, it makes sense in this series.
The trauma that the characters go through had me crying with them, and for them when they relegated grieving to be something for later processing when they felt safe. School is fun and has many new adventures.
The chemistry is fun too. Auri has some fun adventures and new goals, and Fenrir’s detective side is cute.
Regarding my last review, AMBER is explained quickly, and my panic abated.
Beneath the Dragoneye Moons: New Horizons https://a.co/d/foNIkIY

The Gladiator Gauntlet by Selkie Myth, ninth in the Beyond the Dragon Eye Moons series. Five stars, finished June 9, 2023.
Shorter than previous books, I think.
Being a shorter book is not a bad thing; it just surprised me. Thrilling growth and energy destructions. The dissertations (or theses presentations and defenses) were fascinating, in my opinion. Notoriety is rising yet again in this changed world. I am really hoping Night is going to be found in the next book.
Beneath the Dragoneye Moons: The Gladiator Gauntlet https://a.co/d/gHbMETL

Under Ashen Skies by Selkie Myth, tenth in the Beyond the Dragon Eye Moons series. Five stars, finished June 10, 2023.
Extremely exciting
I love Elaine and Iona. Their bonds are precious children, and adventures seem fulfilling. They’re carving out a home and their place in the world. Arachne is funny and very devious. The relationship makes absolute sense, and it’s heartwarming to see that pair. I am extremely curious where the story will go next.
Beneath the Dragoneye Moons: Under Ashen Skies https://a.co/d/eZnZGZr

All the Skills Book 2 by Honour Rae, second in the All the Skills series. Five stars, finished June 14, 2023.
Roads to hell are paved with good intentions, sort of.
Arthur is feeling the lies he’s made a bit in this book. There are multiple startling and concerning discoveries made, and some relationships (friendship and acquaintance) become stronger. I like Marion, and I’m not sure what to think of the mind blowing implications made towards the end. I absolutely love Brixaby, and Joyberry is precious. I’m excited to see what new surprises come in future books. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

The Seventh Princess by D.C. Haenlien, first in the Adelheid series. Five stars, finished June 21, 2023.
Beat my expectations
I live reading about powerful women. If they’re devious or I get to follow their stories from a potentially disadvantaged start, that is even better. I’m very curious about the massively powerful being from the beginning. There are some thoughts in italics that confused me, but I think I understand better after the scenario in the woods. I have various worries, and even with the Addie being somewhat jaded, she also comes across as naive or too trusting in some situations. I do love seeing her manipulate those who think they’re in control. Extremely fun and exciting story. Now, hopefully I can binge read more. Read with Kindle Unlimited.
The Seventh Princess: A Reincarnation Progression Fantasy (Adelheid Book 1) https://a.co/d/3CRFjhL

The Reginnaglar Ceremony by D.C. Haenlien, second in the Adelheid series. Five stars, finished June 22, 2023.
Food, maturity, and emotional
The emphasis this series puts on food is enough to make me ravenous just reading it. The attitude Addie gives her father confused me, but then I realized it’s because of the events during their hunting trip. It was not specified until Matilda made a comment well into the book. Given some discoveries Addie makes, I’m not sure there is a current government in her world that I hope she destroys. The Ritters kind of broke my heart. I love how powerful Adel is becoming, and I am honestly hoping for some sort of powerful growth based on the potentials mentioned. I really hope to read a lot more from this series. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

One More Last Time by Eric Ugland, first in the Good Guys series. Five stars, finished June 23, 2023.
Comedic
I honestly didn’t expect to like this book much. The book has an abrupt beginning, and the main character seems to put a wrench in everything. It’s funny though. Montana is likeable, and he seems to be deliberately choosing to be “better” than the life he escaped. I do wonder about the woman in his past though. An enjoyable book, and a series I plan to continue. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

A Demon’s Pride by V.A. Lewis, second in the Salvos series. Four stars, finished June 23, 2023.
Entertaining
I didn’t really enjoy the constant viewpoint switch. I’m very curious about the Devil, Rachel is adorable, and the Valiant Dreamers seem okay. Salvos is hilarious in her blundering advancement. Read with Kindle Unlimited.
A Demon’s Pride: An Isekai LitRPG Adventure (Salvos, Book 2) https://a.co/d/79ay8yE

Scions of Sylum by S.I. Waxman, second in the Whims of Gods series. Five stars, finished June 26, 2023.
Peaceful? Even with the violenceSure there’s a bit of struggling, and some random traumatic experiences (crazy class quest), but the majority of the book was a peaceful growth arc. Barb becomes a larger part of her life than I could have ever expected, and it’s hilarious. I completely forgot that there would be concern over a couple absences, and I can only imagine how big that will end up. Hex and Aarris are funny and cute together. A pleasant and feel good read, but the end was an oops that’s going to cause some issues. I am looking forward to reading more! Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Now to try and get July, August, September, October, and November done in about a week lol.

Books read in May 2023

I feel like the clock and calendar have hit 3x on a fast forward. Here are May’s reads, and here’s also a crossing of my fingers that I can get these all on here, and finish my homework in time.

Hamma’s Last Prayer by A.F. Kay and B.R. Bea, #6.5 in the Divine Apostasy series, first in the Black Pyramid Legends series. Four stars, finished May 7, 2023.
Good ending.
I haven’t really liked Hamma, and this book took that feeling and ran with it. Yes, stakes in this quest were intense, but Hamma and new friends bonded beautifully. Archie is a new favorite. This was an entertaining side story, but Hamma barely solves a few of her issues. At least Blapy is making her confront her issues. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Life in the North by Tao Wong, first in the System Apocalypse series. Four stars, finished May 8, 2023.
I read this because of a different book’s bad review. That amuses me.
The main character has a motto I like, “What is, is.” That said, he seems to have had trauma all his life, in various forms. This book has an interesting progression, but the classes seem limiting, and the bad characters (looking at the cheater) are disgusting. They don’t even have a positive influence on the story, but make things worse. In the book, the idea seems to be, ‘how much can we push the main character before we gleefully enjoy him breaking?’ I’m unsure whether I liked this book. It was a great read, but the ending just lost me. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Tree of Aeons by spaizzzer, first in the Tree of Aeons series. Five stars, finished May 10, 2023. A favorite series.
Actually very engaging.
This is probably the first book I’ve read with a tree as the main character and primary focus. The story was much more engaging than I expected. It’s fascinating how he develops. Time flows both slow and fast, and there’s always something new and interesting that pops up. I will say I’m not sure about Horns after a while, because he seems to be becoming a bit intense. I also really like Meela, but I have the same distrust for the new researcher. I look forward to reading more. Read with Kindle Unlimited.
Tree of Aeons https://a.co/d/8aNLJiT

Peace Spawner by Alvin Atwater, fourth in the Rise of the Cheat Potion Maker series. Five stars, finished May 11. A favorite series.
An explosion of progress.
Even with massive battles, Nate and his growing adopted clan have a wholesome adventure. Nate has responsibility kind of forced in his face. It’s easy to refuse involvement until things directly affect you. I’m extremely curious about the parents, and I’m curious what Aline has next. Will they be involved? Biting my nails in anticipation for the next book. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Dawn of the Void Book One by Phil Tucker, first in the Dawn of the Void series. Three stars, finished May 13.
Interesting spin on this litrpg apocalypse.
I like the idea of a broken homeless man finding his inner strength and healing and then becoming the lead in pushing back monsters. I also like the idea of a broken drug addicted woman finding her own inner strength and healing and being part of a kick*** pair. At the same time, this book was hard for me to love. There’s a lot of discussion about past trauma, there’s a lot of graphic violence. There’s also annoying politics. This was still an interesting, and new to me, storyline for a litrpg. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Human Insanity by KamikazePotato, first in the An Outcast in Another World series. Five stars, finished May 16.
Honestly? Wow.
I have to say that I spent a lot of emotional debate as to whether I liked this story. Rob is relatable. The fantasy world is bonkers, which only precedes to become more bonkers. Saved a bestie only to be stolen to a new world, survive all manner of traumatic new experiences, discover people —then find out there’s been genocide with questionable sources. The Deities in the background flipping coins add a hilarious few sentences. Rob’s end of the book was exciting and terrifying. The epilogue was sweet, and I agree it’s what Rob would have wanted. I’ve decided I definitely love the series. It’s so unpredictable, I’m eager to experience the next blindsides. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Shared Insanity by KamikazePotato, second in the An Outcast in Another World series. Five stars, finished May 19.
It’s nice, in a traumatic way.
I can’t say I love the “system” aspects in this series compared to other series. I also dislike the fact that leveling doesn’t seem to increase human longevity. Despite this, I really enjoy reading this series. It makes me laugh and smile. It even has relatable PTSD moments (from a c-ptsd perspective). The build up to experiencing a bad skill, and the duration and aftereffects still shocked me. The potential love triangles are amusing, and I almost think a polyamory possibility would be interesting. Anyway, I loved reading this. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn, fourth in the Bridgertons series. Four stars, finished May 19.
I had my suspicions, but I had myself convinced I was wrong. This made me laugh a lot. Sweet, if frustrating romance. I dislike some of Colin’s behaviors and thoughts. Still, that added an aspect of realism. The characters are perfect, but written as people with flaws. Enjoyable read. Read from my library.
Romancing Mr. Bridgerton: The Second Epilogue.
This was included in the audiobook I checked out from my library through Libby app. This epilogue seemed pretty bizarre, and it seemed to have a future before a past. Still, it was sweet.

The Path of Ascension 3 by C. Mantis, obviously third in the series it’s named after…. Five stars, finished May 22. A favorite series.
War games and convoluted plots
Matt’s team, including some temporary additions, do a lot of growing up. I actually really love that mental health and it’s related treatments are important to this bookverse. I like Luna, and not just because of her name (my oldest’s name is Lunari). Luna is going to be a harsh task master. I agree with Matt that politics is mentally draining and exhausting. The war seems to be a combination of brutality, toddler squabbling, and almost every person looking for their own individual successes. Can’t say I like any of the new nobility. Well, as long as Albert and Juni are part of that. Fun read, and made me laugh. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Rising Insanity by KamikazePotato, third in the An Outcast in Another World series. Four stars, finished May 25, 2023.
Topsy turvy and long
The book had me feeling like I was being wrung out emotionally, and that’s a good thing. I feel invested in the story. There were parts that seemed a bit long and dry, but the majority of the book was an adrenaline rush. I had hoped that at least one of a seldom seen group would be worth their existence, but alas I’m now priming my pitchfork with Elders Aleesia and Duran. Mayneth is absolutely hilarious. I want more of her blunt meddling. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Transformation by Seth Ring, fifth in the Battle Mage Farmer series. Five stars, finished May 26, 2023. A favorite series.
Unexpected but also expected and an fiery bull
I didn’t expect to see John travel. His rescue is touching, his growth is unsurprising but also had me feeling vindicated, and so much more. Ellie is absolutely amazing and heartwarming. John’s solution seemed obvious to me, but I didn’t expect how that confrontation would turn out. Highly enjoyed this book, and I don’t regret binge reading instead of sleeping. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

Reunion by J.D. Olson, second in the Electrifies series. Four stars, finished May 28, 2023.
Fun read
It’s interesting to see the new elementals have species’ drawbacks like pride and disconnect. Ione is as adorable as ever, and I loved reading her perspectives. This book raised questions about the twins’ mother. I’m sure that will play into the storyline eventually. And of course, the powerful individuals at the top are plotting. Reading this book had me clapping in excitement many times. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

I hope you find a new read! Blessed Be

Books read between Dec. 5 through Dec. 11

Seasonal depression and overwhelming anxiety have taken a firm hold on me. I’ll survive, and it will pass, but it does affect how I interact with others (for instance, posting this on Friday instead of Monday).
I read two books last week, which put me at 231 read out of my 300 goal.

Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews, seventh in the World of Kate Daniels series, sixth in the Kate Daniels series. Five stars, finished Dec. 6. Originally read Nov. 15, 2014.
New review: Perhaps it’s because I’ve read the series before, but the interaction with Hugh while both are aware of Kate’s parentage seems to have more depth. I love the other Power they met, but that didn’t have the amount of impact I recalled. The losses are still heartbreaking. Even knowing the reasons why some characters acted the way they did—I still wanted to throttle a couple characters. The revelation Kate has regarding Dr. Doolittle was also heartbreaking.
Basically, great book, still a favorite series, highly recommend this. (If your copy of this book has the short An Ill Advised Rescue, read that first.) Read with the Libby Library app.
Original review from years ago: oh man I loved this book. Kate finds out more about her dad but still skirts confrontation. someone has pulled strings and manipulated things to threaten Kate. she finds out how little she knows. Read with Libby Library app.

Dissonance by Nicoli Gonnella, first in the Unbound series. Five stars, finished Dec. 10.
Spellbinding
Holy wow this was a fun read. Felix is captivating, and seems to be on a path to create needed change—of course after some monumental chaos. Both ending scenes caused my heart to race. I didn’t realize the story could become more exciting to me. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X98PHSH?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_dp_BSRHRY89EEBFP15WVG3R

I am considering making a list of patterns I’m using while crocheting, but many are gifts so it will have to wait until I give them to everyone. Possibly in January in that case.
May your mental health find solace and comfort as needed.
Happy reading!

Books read between Nov. 28 and Dec. 4

I am spending a LOT of time crocheting lol. I love the walkthrough tutorials on YouTube, and being able to find patterns on Ravelry and Pinterest. I do seem to have a habit of starting a project, putting it down to do something necessary, and then picking up a new project when I come back to crocheting. Oops.

The World Nexus by Tom Elliott, third in the Grand Game series. Five stars, finished Nov. 28.
Evocative
More unexpected twists and turns, an alienation between Michael and those around him, and dogged perseverance (pun unintended). So much happens in this book, and the emotions Michael feels are understandable. He keeps being pushed and pulled, and I hope he can find a place. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B7RZWQS5?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_SK99NWXDXQCD4VV1BC70

Water Magic by Mari Silva, first in the Elemental Magic series. Four stars, finished Nov. 28. Pagan nonfiction.
Overview, correspondences, and some practices.
I’m actually quite happy with this book. It has a good mix of information from multiple pats, and the correspondence lists are easy to follow. This is not tradition specific, and I think it can be a good resource for beginners and a good book to use for reference for those more experienced on this path. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LS165SW?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_FDS407NFFX40854A8JDZ

System Change by SunriseCV, first in the System Universe series. Five stars, finished Nov. 30.
Another great story to exceed expectations.
I don’t think the blurb accurately portrays how fascinating this book is. I’m glad and sad that Derek’s experiences seem to have enforced a distrusting and jerky attitude, and his experiences in this book seem to help him thaw a bit. I find it absolutely hilarious that Derek keeps dropping Silvi’s name and with multiple different reasons. I also love when an already overpowered individual becomes even more overpowered. The bunnicorn addition was cute and funny. I have high hopes for this series. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B61RJ929?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_SR45QP5FVQCQFTKKC0WX

Flame Kissed by Annie Anderson, first in the Phoenix Rising series. Three stars, finished Dec. 1.
Quick action read
There are a couple spicy scenes, and they’re alright. I liked the action and repeated backstories. Normally, backstory flashbacks annoy me, but these flow perfectly in sync with the story. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016R1RV34?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_S0N71BTTHFQBXFPRQK1G

Advent by Xander Boyce, first in the Red Mage series. Three stars, finished Dec. 4.
Intriguing world building
The multiple dimensions aspect seems to have the potential to be complicated and confusing. Still, it’s a new concept that I haven’t read about before. I’m not sure what to think about different individuals that are powerful. I love that each characters’ skill maps has a unique design. Overall, this was a very entertaining read. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HMLK6JP?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_C4SC75JSXZRVMY74610Z

This puts me at 229 read out of my 300 books read this year goal. I’m happy to have found so many fun new books and series this year.
Happy reading!

Books read between Nov. 21 and Nov. 27

I found some fun series recently, and I’m hoping to find more lol. I do have a lot of books that I haven’t read yet, so I might try and pick one of those up.

A Kiss of Shadow by Linsey Hall, second in the Court of Starlight and Darkness series. Five stars, finished Nov. 21.
Gotta listen to gut instincts
This was a fun read. Sia does seem more damsel than strong, but she has her moments. I do hope she kicks everyone later for the trouble they caused. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1N6Y4Z7?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_1X62DHXTVVV7ZA7M6ZN2

A Crown of Starlight by Linsey Hall, third in the Court of Starlight and Darkness series. Five stars, finished Nov. 24.
Of course a happy ending
I loved many of the revelations in this book. It added some slight but significant depth to a couple characters. I love that Linsey always adds characters that give a hint of a future story. I’m looking forward to finding which character will have a book soon. I will say that one thing I love from this bookverse is the ability to meet lost loved ones. I’ll never get tired of that. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B75FXXLR?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_XR2MK7Z2EWKY5TY4C8PY

Cultivation by Seth Ring, third in the Battle Mage Farmer series. Five stars, finished Nov. 26.
Excitement and then new questions
John, Ellie, and friends do a lot in this book. I do like that John seems less self-hating. Some class surprises, and a lot of new questions. While beating one thing, failing another, and finding even more questions—I look forward to what will come next. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B8FYRJWL?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_ZEASKXT75Q03YN05VRAV

Cursed by Karina Espinosa, first in the Joey Santana series. Four stars, finished Nov. 26.
Intriguing storyline
I like Joey for the most part. It’s weird that she vacillates between a strong person and then a weak person. The storyline is interesting, and shows promise of a fascinating series. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09F4LV29D?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_V6YBRHT0J20KN6J4YBNB

The Grand Game by Tom Elliott, first in the Grand Game series. Five stars, finished Nov. 26.
More exhilarating than expected
With each new event and encounter, the world, story, characters, and main character become more exciting to read about. I love the encounter with Loken, and Michael’s choice felt true to the person he is becoming. I’m not sure if any characters can learn about who they used to be, but their current lives are fascinating. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097ZTNZRW?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_5JJZAZGTC1TE32W0EWQP

Way of the Wolf by Tom Elliott, second in the Grand Game series. Five stars, finished Nov. 27.
Fun read
Michael is better at micromanaging than I could ever be. Honestly, if it were me I don’t think I could remember all of the convulsions. This only adds to the story. I know that Michael wants away, but I hope he comes back quickly. I love that he found a pack, even if those interactions went way beyond what I expected. Read with Kindle Unlimited. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09VLBN6FS?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_ts_VBYYA4KJN9NSH11RE2BN

I feel like I’ve read a lot this past week, however this only puts me at 224 books read out of my 300 goal for this year. I may not finish it, but I absolutely love all the new series I’ve found.
Happy reading!

Why, yes, I did forget to write this post lol. Started to do so yesterday and got distracted. I read more books this week so that made me happy. I’m also working out more and I’m pretty sure everyone knows that helps with endorphins. Anyway, to the book reviews!

The Fourth Realm by Michael Chatfield, fourth in the Ten Realms series. Five stars, finished Sept 12.
I love the ending.
The way this book, and the series, builds up is so perfectly satisfying. Each of the characters becomes important to me as I read. The losses are genuinely and emotionally experienced. This is a new favorite series, and I have high hopes for where it leads. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

The Fifth Realm by Michael Chatfield, fifth in the Ten Realms series. Five stars, finished Sept 13.
Fun and detailed read
The storyline and building concepts of this book and series are detailed in depth. I find it fascinating to read what each new ability or learned thing can do. Rugrat and Erik are blowing minds with their quick advances, but I like how they’re not racing for each new level but seeking to build a firm foundation in those levels and skills. Fun read, not much about the fifth realm in this one though. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

He Who Fights With Monsters 7 by Shirtaloon and Travis Deverell. Five stars, finished Sept 17.
Relieving
Jason has been pushed, pulled, dragged, resurrected, and more by those more powerful than he is. Usually so he can do a job they don’t want or can’t do for whatever reason. His mental health is obvious in that he’s struggling. I’m still mad and hurt at his family abandoning him. I was worried for most of this book that Jason would be taken advantage of again, but thankfully things evened out. I’m really glad he’s seeing Arabelle again (the therapist equivalent) by the end of the book. I also cried at the ending because it was beautiful. Amazing read, and I’m excited for the next book. Read with Kindle Unlimited.

7 Easy Ways to Motivate Someone With Asperger’s by Asperger Experts. Five stars, finished Sept 18.
My youngest was just diagnosed with ASD. A lot of the information in his assessment was eye opening, and I saw a minor idea of how much I don’t know and need to learn. This book was recommended by my therapist, and honestly the steps in this can help everyone and not just parents connecting with their ASD children. I know other reviews said that this was all the authors experiences and not actually helpful, but I completely disagree. Yes, in books like this many passages can be based on an author’s personal experience because it can make the information more relatable. Seeing how a method is used, or could have been used can make things click and finally make sense. This is a relatively short read, and I’ll be referencing back to it as needed. I love that the author includes a different book recommendation for almost all the topics in this. Anyway, for a parent who is completely new to all of this—this will help. It will help me think and could help me in managing myself as well as how I interact with my children, be they diagnosed with ASD or not.

Words I’ve had to look up, second edition

I’m really enjoying notating what words I’m looking up. It’s a tiny and mostly inconsequential tidbit of joy in my life—finding new words. I’ll be honest, most that I look up don’t end up making it into my daily usage, but occasionally I’ll remember their definition and pull it out just because I can. Hopefully you either enjoy learning these as well, or you find it shake-your-head worthy at this level of ridiculous. 😉

For reference, the first in this “series” if I continue it is here: https://levia5.wordpress.com/2022/06/27/words-ive-had-to-look-up-recently/

Apostasy—the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief.

Obduracy—stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion or course of action.

Shibboleth—a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular class or group of people, especially a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important.

Withering—I knew one definition of this, but saw it in a new context: adjective 1. Intended to make someone feel mortified or humiliated; 2. (Of heat) intense; scorching (the one used when I read it this time); noun (definitions I knew) 1. The action of becoming dry and decaying; 2. The action of declining or decaying.

Hortatory—tending or aiming to exhort

Prestidigitation—magic tricks performed as entertainment

Knavery—knave, a dishonest or unscrupulous man.

Anhedonic—(anhedonia) [Psychiatry] inability to feel pleasure.

Turgor—the state of turgidity and resulting rigidity of cells (or tissues), typically due to the absorption of fluid.

Posterize—so the definition actually didn’t help this time. The Kindle chosen definition: print or display (a photograph or other image) using only a small number of different tones. BUT it also pulled up Wikipedia information that did explain the term as used: North American slang derived from an action in the game of basketball, in which the offensive player “dunks” over a defending player in a play that is spectacular and athletic enough to warrant reproduction in a printed poster. The term was originated from Julius Erving, whose high-flying style of play inspired the term. Posterized is also used in similar events in other sports, and it has made its way into business writing.

Cupidity—greed for money or possessions.

Verdure—1. lush green vegetation. 2. the fresh green color of vegetation. 3. a condition of freshness.

Bear market—a market in which prices are falling, encouraging selling.

Sequela—[medicine] a condition that is the consequence of a previous disease or injury.

Deliquesce—(of organic matter) become liquid, typically during decomposition.

Mordant—(especially of humor) having or showing a sharp or critical quality; biting.

Hope you enjoyed! Blessed Be ❤

Words I’ve had to look up recently

I was the kid practicing vocabulary words that were grades ahead of me in school. I even had a kid dare me to read a dictionary cover to cover. Unfortunately, the dictionary I owned was absolutely giant (bigger than all of my later college textbooks) so while I read quite a bit, I did not finish. I still enjoy finding new words to this day, and I’m a bit less embarrassed by mangling them if I’ve only read them instead of heard them. Thankfully, if I’m in doubt YouTube usually has a lot of videos on how an individual word should be said. If it’s a word from another language or a name I am unsure how to pronounce, YouTube also delivers those. Here are some words I’ve looked up recently (usually on my Kindle since I can just highlight the word):

Proprioception—relating to stimuli that are produced and perceived within an organism, especially those connected with the position and movement of the body.

Larrikin—(Australian) a boisterous, often badly behaved young man; a person with apparent disregard for convention; a maverick.

Nomological—relating to or denoting certain principles, such as laws of nature, that are neither logically necessary nor theoretically explicable, but simply taken as true.

Timocracy—a form of government in which possession of property is required in order to hold office; or, a form of government in which rulers are motivated by ambition or love of honor.

Bilious—affected by or associated with nausea or vomiting.

Perspicacity—the quality of having a ready insight into things; shrewdness.

I’ve known that unfurled meant to unfold things. I’m not sure when I learned it but I associate it with unfurling rolled up scrolls. In a book I read recently “furled” was used. I instantly made the connection but looked it up to verify. Furl—roll or fold up and secure neatly (a flag, sail, umbrella, or other piece of fabric). I hadn’t made the connection with fabric though, which is interesting.

Interoception—My therapist brought up this term and I’d never heard of it before. The definition is from the link after, and the source listed is where they got it (copied from the page). It is “the perception of sensations from inside the body and includes the perception of physical sensations related to internal organ function such as heart beat, respiration, satiety, as well as the autonomic nervous system activity related to emotions (Vaitl, 1996; Cameron, 2001; Craig, 2002; Barrett et al., 2004).”
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5985305/#:~:text=Interoception%20is%20the%20perception%20of,%2C%202002%3B%20Barrett%20et%20al.
Conersely, the opposite is next.
exteroception—sensitivity to stimuli that are outside the body, resulting from the response of specialized sensory cells called exteroceptors to objects and occurrences in the external environment. https://dictionary.apa.org/exteroception.

agoge—(Wikipedia source from highlighting on my Fire tablet.) “The agōgē was the rigorous education and training program mandated for all male Spartan citizens, with the exception of the firstborn son in the ruling houses. The word has various meanings in ancient Greek, and comes from the verb [that means to lead]. There is no evidence that it was used to refer to the Spartan education system until the 3rd century BC, but it was often used before then to mean training, guidance, or discipline.”

I wanted to share more in this post, but I’ve added the words as I’ve come across them. Words and writings throughout history are fascinating to me, and seeing how words used in previous centuries is exciting. What can I say? I’m a word nerd, lol. I hope you enjoyed this, and I’ll attempt to make more posts like this.
